Here are the games I’m looking forward to in 2024. Note not all of these will be games released in 2024 but items I’m looking forward to playing that I know I won’t be able to get to in 2023.
This is a fairly long list (never been a better time to play games…) so I’m going to abstain from overloading the page with pictures on this one.
Games coming out in 2024 I’m excited about
Must Play
Last Epoch
This Diablo-like ARPG was interesting for the 5ish hours I’ve played in early access. The full release is presently targeted for a full release in February and I’m looking forward to it! I’m hoping it has more of a story than what early access showed, if it does I think I’ll enjoy this.
Prince of Persia the Lost Crown
This metroid-vania side-scrolling action game looks great in previews and trailers. Shortly before this post some outlets and influencers were given an early look and released their impressions. Everything I’ve seen has been very positive. This game is currently slated for release in mid-January and I’m looking forward to it!
LIke a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Upon playing and finishing Yakuza 6 as well as Like A Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name in late 2023, I’m very excited for Infinite Wealth currently slated to release in late January in all its turn-based JRPG style glory.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Final Fantasy 7 Remake was a beautiful and fun real-time combat reimagining of the 20+ year-old FF7 turn-based combat game. I’m in on the next entry, what has been shown looks pretty exciting and I’m looking forward to the release coming up in late February.
Need to Learn More, but Interested
Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League
I’m a big comic book fan, especially how fun the translation can be from comic book to video game. Unfortunately, this title seems to want to transition into a live service type of experience which historically has not made for a great gaming experience. I want to learn more, and I want to play the game as it’s Kevin Conroy’s last performance of Batman before Kevin’s unfortunate passing earlier in 2023. I’m pretty conflicted about this game, and the verticality they’re shoe-horning in. Why is Harley Quinn flying 400 feet in the air…? I get they found something that helps each character jump really high… but… really? The combat could be fun, the story looks fun, and it’s a rocksteady game which I loved the Arkham games. I’m not looking for a live service experience (and sinking hundreds of hours into this and a live service never-ending treadmills). LIke I said, I’m conflicted but want to understand more as we get closer to release, currently slated for a late January 2024 release.
Skull and Bones
I can’t think of a game with a more troubled development that has been publicly viewable as Skull and Bones. The concept is simple enough, taking the ship combat of Assassin’s Creed 4 and building another game around it, maybe adding some depth to the mechanics and wrapping a fun story around it. Apparently, that’s not a simple order, as the game development began in 2013, was first shown publicly in 2017 and as of the end of 2023 is still not released. The game has had multiple publically announced release dates over the last 3 years and has missed each of them. As we come up on an 11-year development cycle for a game, will it be great, a mess, or boring and mediocre? Youtubers who have had their hands on the game said it was aggressively mediocre, we’ll see if the additional year since that time has done anything to address that. The latest release date is Mid February 2024, we’ll see if it holds!
Dragons Dogma 2
I’ve played the first Dragon’s Dogma and thought it was OK but couldn’t help but feel it was a bit of a tech demo or ‘hey this is a neat idea’ for companion management than it was a cohesive great story and adventure. I’m hoping the second entry shores up on the struggles of the first game and is an amazing experience. We’ll see at the end of March 2024.
Rise of the Ronin
I’m a huge fan of Team Ninjia and the Nioh series. Their latest entry has added verticality with their trademark fast and tactical real-time combat system. I’m very interested to see more leading up to its release at the end of March 2024.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
Eiyuden Chronicle is a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series. The Suikoden series is also being remastered/re-released which I’m also interested in. Very curious to see more of this game! Currently slated for release late April 2024.
Black Myth Wukong
This game appears to be a souls-like retelling of the classic story Journey to the West. Be the monkey king! I’m curious to see more, the game looks beautiful – though this title is the first from the studio. We’ll see how this nascent title develops when it is released in August 2024.
Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2
I’ve heard good things about Space Marine 1 – something I will visit prior to the release of Space Marine 2. This game looks good, a third-person action game which I generally enjoy. Definitely one to keep an eye on until it’s slated to release in September 2024.
Broken Roads
Broken Roads is a post-apocalyptic CRPG developed and set in Australia. Turn-based combat, deep mechanics, and exploration all look great! I’m anxious to learn more as it releases
CRPGS, TTRPGs, and Adventure Games I Want To Experience in 2024
There are multiple CRPGs I want to experience in 2024. Some I don’t know if I’ll enjoy but want to give them an honest try. Some of these titles dance closer to the line on RTS rather than CRPG, but since I love both genres I want to try them!
Baldurs Gate 3
Completion of my first run and maybe doing a new monk run! Not much more to say here, let more Baldur’s Gate continue!!
Age of Decadence
This game seems like a very different type of CRPG in that’s more political intrigue than combat-focused experience. I’m not sure if this will be my cup of tea but I will give it an honest try.
Encased
I have spent a handful of hours into this in 2022 but bounced off. I’d like to revisit it now that I have a bit more experience with this type of game and see if I’ll enjoy it. The setting is neat, 70s tech visual aesthetic with sci-fi elements.
Expeditions: Rome
Ancient Rome CRPG/TTRPG with some base-level mechanics. I have played about an hour of it and it seems deep and exactly the type of thing that’s up my alley.
Spellforce 3
Very highly rated CRPG with RTS elements, I’m interested in checking it out and seeing what it has to offer.
Gamedec
Cyberpunk tech noir adventure RPG? I’d like to check this out next year!
Hard West 2
Hardcore TTRPG which could be a bit too intense and challenging for me, but I’ve seen a bit about it and am interested in jumping in for myself.
Norco
This is an adventure game and not a CRPG, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about the narrative experience to the point I’d like to check it out.
Disco Elysium
I’ve been reticent to dive into this, the grimy art style and grim ‘everything you do is wrong’ kind of style may not be my thing, but I’m willing to give it an honest try. It’s incredibly well-reviewed and I’d like to understand the reason.
Unavowed
I’ve heard this described as a game version of Dresden files… that’s more than enough to make me want to check it out.
Wasteland 3
I started a play-through right before Baldurs Gate 3 came out, I dove into BG3 and hadn’t come back. I loved my time with this game with what I had played and am looking forward to going back.
Shadowrun Returns
This is another TTRPG system making a transition to a CRPG video game. I’m pretty curious about how it turned out (generally well-reviewed) so am looking forward to checking it out.
