Here’s what I want to know more about and upcoming games I’m really looking forward to. Most of these were covered in the Future Games Show, Sony’s State of Play, the Summer Games Fest presentation, and the Xbox presentation.
Games I want to know more about:
- 1666 Amsterdam – I downloaded the prologue, which was made available this week. The prologue is a beautiful (if not a bit bizarre in an intriguing way) story of women of different time periods dabbling in witchcraft. The prologue introduces an animal companion who seems to be from the future. The prologue is pretty much an interactive novel, though the full game trailer showcases combat systems. The beauty of the game, acting, and story makes me want to see where it goes. I’m interested to know more.
- Blood Message – This is a narrative-driven linear action-adventure game set in the middle of an uprising in the late Tang dynasty. I don’t yet know much about it, but from what I saw, I want to know more.
- Stranger than Heaven – Love the style and direction; a little concerned about Snoop Dogg and… somehow after being dead 30 years, Tupac Shakur. Why are musicians playing characters in turn-of-the-century to mid-century narrative games? I don’t know; it’s an odd call, but this studio has churned out some of my favorite games in the last decade and has earned some latitude.
- Last Ronin – I don’t even know what kind of game this is; it’s a take on the TMNT graphic novel of the same name. PlatinumGames is associated with it; Platinum has made some of the best and most questionable action games of the last 15 years or so.
- Crossfire – 3rd person shooter with what appears to be a strong narrative focus. I’m interested in what I’ve seen and want to see more.
- End of abyss – very atmospheric isometric game that looks interesting. Not sure it will be for me, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen.
- Wolf Among Us 2 – Loved the first game when I first played it… 10 to 15 years ago. Absolutely on board to play a second one if it’s of the same quality; that’s the question though, isn’t it?
- Stellar Blade Blood Rain – a gorgeous follow-up to the first Stellar Blade game. Great action-focused combat and beautiful visuals. I’d like to learn a bit more about the story.
- Threads of time – A neat 2D/3D Chrono Trigger-inspired story. Art was beautiful in an SNES throwback kind of way. Definitely interested to know more.
- Screenbound – Fun mesh of 2D and 3D platforming games inspired by (from what I’ve seen so far) Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda.
- Shot One Fighters – An interesting take on a mishmash between a roguelike and a fighting game. I’m interested in following this and learning more.
- Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis – Reboot of the first Tomb Raider game, looks good from what I’ve seen.
- Guild Wars 3 – They said it is the next step in the evolution of MMOs… big words; I’m curious what that means.
- God of War Trilogy Remake – Very curious to know more about this project. I really enjoyed the original games when they were released. What would a remake of them look like today?
- GTA VI – It’s been roughly 13 years since the last GTA game was released; since that time, a majority of the creative team involved had moved on. What does a new GTA game, presumably with a budget of 1 billion dollars or more, look like today? Can they meet the absurd community expectations for the single-player campaign? The multiplayer version will make or break Rockstar as a company for the next 10 years. Whatever ends up happening, it should be interesting.
- Wo Long 2 – I generally love games by Team Ninja. The combat is great, and games are quite a bit of fun. I’m excited to learn more about this upcoming title.
- Senua – Incredibly beautiful series, I need to finish playing the second title and am curious to learn more about this third entry.
- Crazy Taxi World Tour – A remake/sequel to Crazy Taxi in 2026? Yes, I would like to know more.
- Persona 6 – Persona 5 was an amazing game I wanted to love more than I did.
Upcoming Games I’m excited about:
- Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resync’d – Release July 9, 2026
- I didn’t play Black Flag to completion when it initially released; I recall being a bit upset about how they did Desmond dirty in AC1-3 I was a bit burned on AC4. Since it’s been a decade and a half or so, I’m ready to take another look at what most people call the best AC game of all time.
- Metal Gear Solid Master Collection vol. 2 – Release August 27, 2026
- Metal Gear Solid 4 released on something other than the PS3? Yes please, sign me up. I’ve never played MGS 4 since I never owned a PS3, so I’m very excited to check this out on release. It’s already been noted that resolution increases and 60fps will be in place at launch. I’m so excited to check it out.
- Star Wars: Zero Company – Release August 27, 2026
- This game is an x-com type strategy game with, what the developers have stated, significant narrative elements and user choice. I love all of these things and am excited to play it.
- Blood of the Dawnwalker – Release September 3, 2026
- Vampire game from a few of the Witcher 3 developers. They’re trying a few new things so I’m a little on the fence about how the quest system and how everything will come together.
- Marvel’s Wolverine – Release September 15, 2026
- The only video game I have pre-ordered this year. I am generally against pre-ordering and the shady publisher shenanigans around it… but for this game? I’m in.
- Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 4 – Release September 17, 2026
- I’m curious how this game will come together after about 10 years since the last game. I’m generally in but am curious what the critical reception will be.
- Control Resonant – Release September 24, 2026
- Control was one of my favorite games of 2019, the sequel is definitely on my radar. I’m curious how they will be able to balance great gameplay with the absolutely crazy narrative.
- Onimusha: Way of Sword – Release September 25, 2026
- I was a fan of the Onimusha games in the PS2 days; I’m curious how they will land the same type of game today, built in a modern way.
- Castlevania – Belmont’s Curse – October 15, 2026
- From the developers of Dead Cells, one of the best rogue-like games ever made. I love seeing this dev team try their hand at a Metroidvania.
- Phantom Blade 0 – Release October 29, 2026
- The development history of this game has been interesting, starting out as a more indie title and then upgraded to AA. It’s seems to be a distinctive action combat game that shows really well. Curious to see how well it ends up playing and how it is received critically.
- Fable – February 2027
- Absolutely gorgeous medieval fantasy game from the Forza development team. It’s been pushed a couple of times, but as a fan of the original series I’m excited to see what the upcoming release will end up looking like. Also, I’ve loved the humor I’ve seen so far.
- Final Fantasy 7 Revelation – Release Spring 2027
- The final game of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. Nuff said.
- God of War: Laufey – Release Unknown
- There was a 20-minute gameplay video in the June 2026 State of Play. I’m sold.
- Bloodstained The Scarlet Engagement – Release TBD
- I really enjoyed the first Bloodstained game; I’m on board for a sequel.
- Marvel 1943 – Rise of Hydra – Release TBD
- I’m a complete mark for Marvel stuff, including games (except Lego games, those aren’t for me). The very limited cinematic trailer I’ve seen looks great… but definitely want to see what the actual game is. Maybe there will be a trailer at the game awards this year.
- Starfinder Afterlight – Release TBD
- CRPG coming with some humor (so I’m told)… I don’t know much about it, just that it has some humor and is a CRPG. I’m following this with interest and have heard it is targeted for release in 2027.
- Warhammer 40k Dark Heresy – Release TBD
- Follow-up from Owlcat Studios from Rogue Trader.
- The Expanse: Osiris Reborn – Release TBD
- Owlcat’s take on a Mass Effect-like space adventure in the IP of The Expanse.
- Exodus – Release TBD
- A Mass Effect-like game from quite a few creative people behind the Mass Effect series. I’m in, as I re-download Mass Effect Legendary Edition to do another playthrough of the series….
- Clockwork Revolution – Release TBD
- InExile made fantastic CRPGs; to my knowledge, this is their first non-CRPG game and is more of a narrative-driven first-person action game with dark humor. I’m in.
- Divinity – Release TBD
- How do you follow up game of the year Baldur’s Gate 3? With another Divinity game, of course. Sign me up.
- Solasta II – Release TBD
- Solasta 1 was great, just lower production values because money is a thing… Solasta 2 has a higher budget and is in EA right now. It’s coming along and I’m excited for full release.
